The Travelling Professor, Sid Deshmukh, captured this beautifully (and humorously!) in a recent Instagram post:we are not a software programme to be upgraded every January. Resolutions often feel like patches and updates; what we truly need is connection—to self, to purpose, to what nourishes us.
A gentler way to orient your year:
your nudge word
Instead of rigid resolutions, choose a single nudge word—a gentle guide you can return to when life gets loud. Think of it as a compass rather than a checklist. It’s soft enough to hold when plans change and firm enough to shape daily choices. A nudge word reminds you of what matters most—whether that’s presence, courage, rest, or grace. It helps you pause, check in, and make choices that align with your values.
Where does the term nudge word come from? It borrows from behaviourial science’s concept of a “nudge”—a subtle prompt that influences decisions without force. Applied here, it’s a word that quietly steers you towards what matters, inviting discernment rather than judgement. It helps us notice whether we’re numbing or nourishing—whether we’re reaching for distraction or making conscious choices.
This year, Start with Self — because when we’re anchored in who we are, we lead with clarity, relate with grace, and sustain our energy. Simone de Beauvoir said it best:“I accept the great adventure of being me.” It’s an invitation to embrace your values and aliveness as you navigate the unknown.
Connection to self is not indulgence; it’s intelligent. When we’re connected, we choose more wisely, relate more generously, and recover more quickly.
May 2026 be a year of connection and growth—where we evolve with intention and thrive in the adventure of being ourselves.
Live it! Love it! Do it!
FAB regards,
