Women’s Day  |  Celebrate

Humanity
With Women’s Day being celebrated on 9 August 2023, we find ourselves thinking of how much has changed for women over the years. In 1956, when 20 000 women rose up to march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, demanding the end to pass laws, they sang a song, which when translated means: “You strike a woman, you strike a rock.” Powerful words. Not only are Women’s Rights being taken seriously; women have also moved up the ladder in the corporate world, sports world and various professions. Our magnificent Protea’s Netball team showed good form competing in the World Cup hosted in Cape Town. Such an inspiration for young women in our country. Women are participating and excelling in cricket, soccer and rugby, all predominantly male sports.

Gone are the days, young girls were raised to find a good husband, keep a household and raise kids.

We have CHOICES!

What wonderful freedom these choices bring to our lives. You do not have to identify as a feminist to know that you have the right to choose what happens to your body, where you want to live, what you want to do for a living, whether you want to be married or not.

It is what we do with these choices that is important. So many before us, fought for the right to vote, for or against birth control, fairness in the workplace. It is our responsibility as women to use these rights and opportunities for the benefit of our fellow women.

Whether you donate to a cause that supports women, give of your time to help young women improve their lives, or provide opportunities for women in the workplace, we all have a role to play.

CELEBRATE being a woman!
